LG Innotek has announced that it will enter the sensor market with advanced LiDAR technology to increase its market share in the global Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) segment. The company says it has successfully developed high-performance light detection and ranging sensors, one of the key technologies necessary for self-driving cars.
Lidar is an advanced sensor assembly that emits infrared light and measures the time it takes for it to bounce back to generate a precise three-dimensional image of the surrounding object. This technology is critical to the safety and performance of autonomous vehicles.
According to LG Innotek, their new product can detect objects at a distance of up to 250 meters, and in bad weather conditions, the detection distance is three times that of the existing product. The company said the new lidar was able to accurately detect moving objects up to 45 meters away, even in fog conditions with visibility of only 2 meters, marking a significant technological breakthrough.
The move is an important step for LG Innotek to expand its business scope, as the company currently holds a leading position in the smartphone camera module market. By leveraging their expertise and technology in the field of optics, they hope to become the world's leading sensor solutions provider.
"We will create differentiated value for our customers by extending our world-leading technology and experience accumulated in the field of smartphone camera modules to the field of automotive sensing solutions," said Moon Hyok-soo, CEO of LG Innotek. The company plans to expand its ADAS sensor solutions business, from camera modules to lidar and radar, to meet growing market demand.
According to market research firm Yole Intelligence, the global liDAR market for autonomous vehicles is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years and could reach $11.2 billion by 2030. LG Innotek is expected to become a major player in this market and drive the development and application of LiDAR technology.
