Samsung Electronics and LG Display are investing billions of dollars to expand production capacity for medium-size OLED panels to secure orders for Apple's ipads and MacBooks, foreign media reported on Tuesday.
Foreign media say OLED screens are more difficult to manufacture than LCD screens, especially large and medium-sized ones. But OLED screens have advantages such as higher contrast, lower power consumption and thinner thickness, so they are favored by companies such as Apple.
Previously, it was reported that Apple plans to release an OLED iPad Pro in 2024 and a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen in 2026. To meet Apple's demand, both Samsung and LG Display are accelerating the expansion of OLED production capacity and adopting more advanced technologies to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is expected to invest 4.1 trillion won to install an OLED production line in Tangjeong, South Korea, and start mass production from 2026. LG Display spent 3.3 trillion won to install a new production line of medium-size OLED panels at its Paju plant, using the sixth-generation technology.
