Micron, the world's third-largest DRAM company, will actively target the high bandwidth memory (HBM) market starting in 2024. Market experts predict that the competition for market share among Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron will become more intense.
According to industry sources, Micron revealed during its recent financial report conference call that it has developed the industry's best HBM3E product and will commence production in early 2024, expecting significant sales volume. HBM3E, as the next-generation version of HBM, is believed to offer higher added value compared to the currently leading products, HBM2 and HBM3.
Micron is currently sending HBM3E samples to major HBM enterprise customers including NVIDIA for performance testing. NVIDIA has been supplying artificial intelligence accelerators to companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, with HBM packaged within its graphics processing units (GPUs). These artificial intelligence accelerators are key components for servers used to advance generative artificial intelligence services.
Presently, the HBM market is predominantly led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. According to market research firm TrendForce, by 2023, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are expected to hold 46% and 49% market share in the HBM market, respectively, leaving the remaining market share to be claimed by Micron.
In this context, Micron plans to enter the next-generation HBM market next year, which is anticipated to have a negative impact on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. This is because Micron's HBM supply may alleviate HBM shortages and intensify price competition among HBM manufacturers. Given that Micron is a U.S.-based company, analysts suggest that major companies such as NVIDIA and AMD may favor products of the same nationality as Micron. Industry insiders in the semiconductor field commented, "With Micron announcing its active entry into the market, competition is likely to intensify."
