Rapidus, a Japanese semiconductor company, has decided to build a semiconductor plant in Hokkaido

According to the People's Daily Online in Tokyo, February 28, Rapidus, a Japanese semiconductor company founded in 2022, on February 27 confirmed its plan to build a factory in Chihiro, Hokkaido. Rapidus President Junichi Koike expressed his intention during a visit to Hokkaido Governor Naomichi Suzuki on Tuesday. Rapidus plans to begin mass production of next-generation semiconductors at the plant in 2027.
Rapidus is a high-end chip company set up by eight Japanese companies including Toyota Motor, SONY, Nippon Electric, Denso, SoftBank, Kaixia and Bank of Mitsubishi UFJ. The Japanese government plans to provide 70 billion yen in subsidies to support Rapidus.
Rapidus plans to produce a product equivalent to a 2-nanometer chip, according to the report. The product will be widely used in areas such as autonomous driving of cars and artificial intelligence.
