According to the latest reports, Foxconn, one of Apple's manufacturing partners, has begun production of the upcoming iPhone 15 model at its Sriperumbudur factory in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Bloomberg, citing insider sources, reported that besides Foxconn, Wistron and Tata Group are also likely to assemble the iPhone 15 in India, with Tata Group in the process of acquiring the Wistron facility in the outskirts of Bangalore.
Previously, assembly production of iPhones in India has been limited, resulting in delays of 6 to 9 months in the release timeline. However, since the production of the iPhone 14 in India, the country's assembly capabilities have strengthened. As of the end of March 2023, 7% of iPhones were already being produced in India.
Apple has been making efforts to shift its manufacturing operations from China to other regions to mitigate supply chain risks arising from US-China trade relations. Leveraging financial incentives provided by the Indian government, Apple has expanded its production in India with the support of its Taiwanese suppliers. In the previous fiscal year, Apple doubled its iPhone production in India to over $7 billion.
With the reopening of retail stores in India in April this year and strong sales growth of iPhone in the Indian market during the June quarter, Apple sees retail opportunities and long-term production growth potential in India. Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Indian Prime Minister Modi during his visit to India in April 2023 and expressed Apple's commitment to investing in India. The iPhone 15 is expected to be launched on September 12, 2023, with the Indian-manufactured version likely to be available a few weeks later.
